There is no complex chemical process involved here.  You simply use a soft, damp cloth and soapy water.  Dishwashing liquid works well too in this regard.  First wipe down the doorknob and the faceplate on a monthly basis to keep it clean.  For the lock itself, getting a silicone lubricant to spray into the latch and keyhole is the way to go.  After spraying, work the key around the hole to spread the lubricant, thereby not only loosening any dirt, but also making sure the inner workings stay lubricated too.
