To open a lock a pin stack consisting of a driver pin and a key pin must be elevated so that the two rest on opposite sides of the shear line. A key lifts key pins within a lock. These key pins are all different sizes. The driver pins will be a universal size. Therefore, the key needs to have the right set of grooves to lift the key pins to the correct height. To make a mastery key you add a small wafer between the driving pins and key pinsThis means there are two different shear lines for this lock. One shear line is used for the user’s key and the other is used for the master key. If you were to compare the shear line for all locks belonging to the same master key, you would see that they are the same (the pin heights match)
